Young Kashmiri designer makes waves in fashion world

(I wrote this one in 2007. Wow, time just flies.

New Delhi: He travels the fastest who travels alone. And up-and-coming designer from Nigeen area of Srinagar Zubair Kirmani is no exception to the axiom. Zubair may have embarked on the journey all alone but today he is a name to reckon with in the fashion industry in a short span of time and his creations are nothing but his metier. It is a triumph of sorts. Only few would dispute his aptitude and genius with apparel. But he refuses to sit on his laurels and bends over backwards to leave his imprints in the razzle-dazzle world of fashion for which he deserves unalloyed encomia, if nothing more.

Today, he calls it a mirror image of his inner-self that has taken an artistic form. It is an expression designer Zubair Kirmani coined to describe his first-ever dynamic label BOUNIPUN driven by his past experiences in his hometown Kashmir, as he forayed into the fashion industry to put on view the collection at the India’s biggest fashion savvy event-- the Wills lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW). Born and brought up in Kashmir, Zubair Kirmani’s BOUNIPUN—in other words Chinar leaf- reflected the kaleidoscopic times in the state from worse to normal and at the same time the rising hope among its people through the inimitable apparel. “Having spent a large slice of my life watching the changing shades of Chinar leaves in the Valley, I just have brought my inside out in the form of BOUNIPUN and the collection has brought alive my inner feelings,” says the designer. The prominent shades of blacks, grey and whites revealing gloom, stability and hope in his BOUNIPUN collection symbolised both his passion and emotional bond to his hometown and his aesthetic sense, which is devoid of the erstwhile traditional Kashmiri outfit embroidered pheran (gown) and scarf coupled with jewellery. Zubair’s experimentation with Kashmiri tradition in the form of BOUNIPUN is contemporary. Zubair debuted BOUNIPUN in the 2006 WLIFW when he was part of Hi-5 category a group of five new designers. But, the existence of the label actually goes back to the time when Zubair was a student of Class 12th.

“One fine day while drawing the leaves on my t-shirt, I thought of writing the name BOUNIPUN. I somehow compiled the name. Now, I have also registered it under several Acts to build a brand,” he says. BOUNIPUN sent buyers and audience into a feeding frenzy when models showcasing his light embroidered and less embellishments exhibited with scintillating silhouettes strutted the catwalk. Going down the memory lane, this reporter was overwhelmed when she saw an array of buyers belonging to different countries had flooded this new designer’s hothouse atmosphere of stall despite the outlets of fashion luminaries such as Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani and Rajesh Pratap Singh, among others. The label delivers subtle collections experimenting with textiles. Zubair has created a niche for himself with his signature surface ornamentation that makes his creations resourceful, discreet and elegant.

BOUNIPUN speaks volumes of Zubair’s forte as a talented fashion designer, especially because he had done training in fashion from not a very famed institute as NIFT. But BSc from a little-known institute in Bangalore. “When I was in class 6th, I started reading magazines, which carried photos displaying all kinds of razzmatazz. Then I used to make leaves and draw paintings on T-shirts. Gradually, I picked up a bit and became serious as I got into class12th; I began approaching tailors to know more about fashion,” recalls Zubair amid peals of laughter. “In fact, whenever I asked anyone about fashion in Kashmir, they criticized me. For any Kashmiri, fashion was something like wearing bikinis or shorts only,” says Zubair. “Fashion is beautiful provided ideas are intrinsically woven and systematically implemented into the collection; fashion is how you live. If you wear good things you will love it,” he believes.

BOUNIPUN primarily focused together on both contemporary minimalism and classic heritage from its roots. The brand rediscovered importance of crafted detailing in his avant-garde collection. The brand’s metier lies in sophisticated women’s western line and men’s fashion formals. “I do minimal changes in my new collection rather than making rash changes every season. All my apparel on the fashion shows since 2006 hardly have any major changes, except for some addition or subtraction in geometrical motives, recreation of detailing,” he affirms. Zubair, who belongs to Nigeen area in Srinagar, also has to his credit a mixed qualification background, though he left the degrees halfway in an attempt to devote more time to his most favored beat of fashion.

“My parents wanted me to secure a BSc degree in Electronics. I studied Electronics for a year in Kashmir. Unable to concentrate, I left for Bangalore to pursue Engineering. It continued for a year until I met with an accident,” he reveals. The designer adds: “It was a blessing in disguise for me because while I was recuperating, I told my parents I am not going to follow it and successfully managed to convince them. I got a chance to learn and develop professional skills in fashion when I finally started working with some choreographers. It was when I was doing the course in fashion in Bangalore.”

Zubair proudly says, “Fashion gave me a chance to bring out my creative instincts, which both science and engineering failed to do. And I am lucky because I began my career with Quintessential (Boun) Chinar, which has always inspired me and triggered a lot of poetic imagination in me.”

To a poser about his role model, Zubair says, “When I started, I was inspired by Rohit Bal, and Tarun Tahiliani . However, designers don't generally have any mentors as they always look forward to coming up with something new. Similarly, I developed my creation, which is unique in its existence. I do make mistakes and make strenuous efforts to improve upon it with each trial.”

When asked about his collections he has come up with so far, Zubair says, “The focus was mainly on interplay with subtle sensuality given by the effect of surface transparency. They were created by the use of natural fabrics crafted with motifs inspired by Kashmiri tradition, the purity of white remains undisputed with use of unadulterated natural hues.”

Zubair now wishes to develop his own signature in Kashmir and setting up some units in the Valley.

“Kashmir has a lot of potential in handicrafts and handloom products such as shawls and others. I want to ease the techniques in embroidery in the Valley, revive Kashmiri shawls and modernize embroidery to give them a new contemporary look. I will start with garments and my units in the Valley will be in coordination with my Delhi office,” he suggests.

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships are part of the Australia Awards initiative which was announced by the Prime Minister in November 2009.

The ALA Fellowships program is part of a regional program that aims to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages with developing countries.

ALA Fellowships is a highly flexible program that offers Australian organisations opportunities to provide short term study, research and professional development activities in Australia to mid-career professionals and senior officials from eligible countries.

ALA Fellowships complement the longer term ALA Scholarships providing opportunities to current and aspiring leaders who cannot leave their positions for extended periods.

ALA Fellowships are available across a broad range of fields relevant to Australia's foreign policy agenda or development outcomes.

Applications addressing the priority areas of disability and development, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation are particularly encouraged.

Applications are restricted to Australian organisations demonstrating on-going linkages with counterpart overseas organisations in eligible countries.

Australian organisations from a wide range of academic, research, business, industry, media, NGOs, professional groups and government may apply to host ALA fellows. To qualify, organisations will be required to demonstrate region-specific linkages and the relevance of the proposed programs to the priority areas.

Partner country counterpart organisations and individual fellows are not eligible to apply for support, however they may initiate contact with an Australian organisation to explore their interest in applying.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarships are a component of the Australian Leadership Awards, a regional program under the Australian Scholarships initiative. Australian Leadership Awards aim to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific.

They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. The ALA program comprises of Scholarships and Fellowships.

ALA Scholarships are academically elite awards offered to high achievers from the Asia-Pacific region each year to undertake postgraduate study (Masters or Doctorate) and a Leadership Development Program in Australia.

Selection for ALA Scholarships is highly competitive, based on leadership qualities and on academic excellence.

ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region. In this regard, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies.

In future years, ALA scholars will belong to a unique group - the Australian Scholarships Alumni Network (ASAN) - that will maintain strong and enduring links to Australia. Managed by AusAID as part of Australia's overseas aid program, ALA Scholarships are open only to citizens of countries in the Asia-Pacific region with which Australia has a significant aid program.

Objectives of ALA ScholarshipsALA Scholarships aim to:

develop a cadre of leaders advancing regional reform, development and governance

increase exchange of knowledge and information within the region

build common purpose and understanding between Australia and the region

build capacity to address priority regional issues

build effective networks between Australia and the region

demonstrate the benefits of Australian education through the provision of high quality education.

Fields of study
Awards are open to all fields of study, however, study programs that relate to the priority themes of international trade, pandemics, security and climate change (including clean energy) are encouraged. Scholarships are not available for military training, or training in areas related to nuclear technology and flying aircraft.

Levels of study

An ALA Scholarship enables candidates to undertake studies leading to a Masters or Doctorate degree in Australia. It does not include Graduate Diplomas, with the exception of those Masters courses that require the completion of a Graduate Diploma as part of the Masters degree.

Who should apply

Outstanding applicants with:

a very high level of academic achievement at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level

a high level of English language proficiency

demonstrated leadership potential and good prospects to influence social and economic

policy reform and development outcomes in their home country and in the Asia-Pacific region

a commitment to participate ASAN on their return home.

Scholarship benefits
An ALA Scholarship has a total value of up to A$110,000 for Masters degrees and A$220,000 for Doctoral programs, not including provisions for the leadership development program.. Benefits include:

Scholarship for women's and gender studies in Europe

GEMMA is the first Erasmus Mundus Master in Women's and Gender Studies in Europe. It is, therefore, a master of excellence supported by the European Commission which selected it as Erasmus Mundus from within 160 project proposals for 2006.

GEMMA is the achievement of long years of efforts trying to advance in the tuning of our diverse educational structures and create common curricula in Women's and Gender Studies. The eight partner institutions represent seven European countries with different locations and cultures across all Europe: University of Granada (Spain, Co-ordinator), University of Bologna (Italy), Central European University (Hungary), University of Hull (United Kingdom), Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis (Slovenia), University of Lodz (Poland), University of Oviedo (Spain) and University of Utrecht (Netherlands).

GEMMA is an interdisciplinary programme that provides high quality academic education and professional competences for personnel working or intending to work in the areas of Women's Studies, Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities across Europe. It collects our best offers both from the humanities and social sciences, making it attractive to students and offering a wide span of options and combinations. Courses are taught by the most distinguished and highly recognized professors in the fields of research at each one of the departments involved.

GEMMA provides a unique opportunity to benefit from mobility as students are expected to study at different European universities. Third Country Students Erasmus Mundus scholarship (category A)

Erasmus Mundus scholarships allow third-country graduate students to follow the whole programme, i.e. they will receive a scholarship for the whole duration of the GEMMA programme. The GEMMA Consortium decides who receives an Erasmus Mundus scholarship on the basis of CVs, study and academic merits, motivation, recommendations, language skills, etc. The European Commission confirms this selection and officially assigns the grants.

Erasmus Mundus grants for Third Country Scholars

Erasmus Mundus scholarships are for third-country scholars coming to Europe. Scholars have to apply for these scholarships directly to GEMMA. Erasmus Mundus scholarships allow third-country scholars to perform a teaching or research assignment or other scholarly work at one of the GEMMA Consortium institution. The consortium decides who receives an Erasmus Mundus scholarship on the basis of CVs, study and academic merits, motivation, recommendations, language skills, etc. The Commission confirms this selection and assigns the grants.

Japan - World Bank Scholarship

The mission of the World Bank Group is to reduce poverty and improve living standards through sustainable development and investment in people. The World Bank Institute (WBI) is at the forefront of the Bank's efforts to promote learning and deliver to the stakeholders, the best thinking and experience emerging from around the world on issues crucial to reform and socio-economic development.

Through its management of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) and the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSM Fellowships), WBI supplements its training programs by providing opportunities for graduate study to promising professionals from developing member countries.

The objective of the Scholarship and Fellowship Programs is to help create an international community of highly-trained professionals working in the field of economic and social development. The community will actively participate in the capacity building efforts in the developing countries.

Respective candidates are encouraged to carefully go through both the JJ/WBGSP and RSM Fellowships and review the eligibility criteria. For the JJ/WBGSP Regular Program and RSM Fellowships candidates apply directly to the Secretariat at the World Bank Headquarters. For both the Partnership Programs the respective host universities should be contacted.

Eligibility

To apply for a JJ/WBGSP scholarship under the Regular Program, an applicant must:

Be a national of a World Bank member country eligible to borrow.

Be born after March 31, 1970.

Have, by March 31, at least 2, preferably 4 to 5, years of recent full time professional experience acquired after a university degree, in the applicant’s home country or in another developing country.

Hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent.

Be in good health.

Be of good character.

Not be a permanent resident or a national of any industrialized country.

Not be residing in an industrialized country for more than one year.

Not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, staff of the World Bank Group (the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, International Development Association, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes), consultant, or relative of the aforementioned.

Program of Study

Eligible applicants should propose a program of study related to development at the master's level, in fields such as economics, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, or other development‑related subject.

The proposed program of study should start during the academic year 2010/2011 for a maximum duration of two years. The JJ/WBGSP does not support applicants who are already enrolled (i.e., taking classes) in graduate degree programs.

Applicants should submit evidence of current unconditional admission to at least one development-related university master’s degree program. Applicants are encouraged to apply to one of the Preferred Universities.

The Program does not support studies in the applicant’s home country.

The Program does not support applicants for MBA, MDs, M.Phil. or Ph.D. degrees.

The Program does not support legal studies such as J.D., L.L.M. or S.J.D. except for L.L.M.’s related to human rights, environment, or good governance.

Fellowships at The National Gallery of Canada

Competitive fellowships are offered in the fields of Canadian Art; Indigenous Art; and History of Photography.

Eligibility
Open to art historians, curators, critics, independent researchers, conservators, conservation scientists and other professionals in the visual arts, museology and related disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, who have a graduate degree or equivalent publication history.

The fellowships are open to international competition.

Tenure
Fellowships are tenable only at the National Gallery of Canada. The term of full-time residency must fall within the period 1 September to 31 August. Awards can be up to $5,000 a month, including expenses and stipend, to a maximum of $30,000. Fellowships are not renewable.

The Library and Archives provides office space and supplies for the program, with desktop computer workstation running the Windows XP operating system and equipped with Microsoft Word, as well as internal and external telecommunications facilities, and full library support services, including extended hours of access.

Applications
Completed applications must include all of the following:
A statement of the aims, methodology and anticipated results of the investigation headed by a summary of the proposal (this section of the application is limited to a maximum of three pages);
Proposals for the dissemination of the results of the inquiry;

A brief outline of the research materials and facilities required (e.g., bibliography of primary and secondary resources; access to National Gallery of Canada collections; access to the expertise and resources of other Ottawa area institutions; etc.); The proposed dates and timetable of the residency at the Gallery;

An outline of projected costs, including expenses and stipend. Eligible expenses include relocation to Ottawa, subsistence during the residency, and project-related travel, supplies and services;
A full curriculum vitae, including education, professional employment history, awards and honours, publications, exhibitions, and work-in-progress;

Information on other grants applied for or received, employment commitments and paid sabbatical arrangements, for the proposed period of residency;

Three letters of recommendation, sent under separate cover by the referees to the Gallery. These letters must address the candidate's achievements in general, and the fellowship proposal in particular;

Examples of finished work, textual, visual, or both.

Assessment Criteria
The review committees, comprised of National Gallery of Canada jurors, will examine research proposals with the following considerations in mind:
The significance, originality, goals, potential contribution and feasibility of the proposal;

The clarity of the proposal and methodology of inquiry, and the thoroughness of the supporting bibliography, where appropriate;

The need for and the benefit to be derived from enhanced access to the collections of the Gallery, and, conversely, the relevance to the research community of this exploration of the Gallery's collections;

The candidate's education, previous experience and demonstrated accomplishments in relationship to the proposal;

The endorsements of the letters of reference.
The deliberations of the review committees remain confidential. Their decisions are final.

Toshiba International Foundation Scholarships

Applications are invited for three Toshiba International Foundation scholarships for a three-month stay in Japan to be completed by the end of March. There are three scholarships, generously funded by the Toshiba International Foundation, and each is worth 7000,- Euro. Applicants must be graduate students or their equivalent who have completed four or more years of full-time study, and they must be specialising in some branch of Japanese studies at an institution in Europe. Applications should consist of a CV, a brief statement (not more than 300 words) of the project for which they wish to pursue their research in Japan, and a letter of support from the student’s supervisor or adviser, who should submit the application on the student’s behalf. Applications should be sent by e-mail to office@eajs.eu

Since the purpose of the scholarship is to encourage the academic study of Japan by those who have not already had a long-term experience in Japan, applications by Japanese High School graduates will not be considered.

The closing date for applications is 30 April, and the decision will be announced by mid-June. The EAJS has been asked by the Toshiba International Foundation to administer these scholarships, and the decisions will be made by the Council of the EAJS.

Master/Doctoral Scholarships at ALGANT

Established in 2004, the ALGANT consortium now consists of eight universities on four continents, namely the universities of Bordeaux (France), Chennai (India), Leiden (Netherlands), Milano (Italy), Concordia (Montréal, Canada), Padova (Italy), Paris-Sud (France) and Stellenbosch (South Africa).

In collaboration with the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, the Institut des Sciences Mathématiques in Montréal and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cape Town, the consortium offers a two-year world-class integrated master course and a joint doctorate programme in pure mathematics, with a strong emphasis on Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory. Both programmes have received the Erasmus Mundus label.

Applying for the ALGANT Doctoral scholarship

The ALGANT Joint Doctorate programme is open to all interested graduated students in Europe and elsewhere. Gwangju Prize for Human Rights

Each year, the May 18 Memorial Foundation announces this award in a spirit of solidarity with those working towards democracy. The award goes to one individual or organization who has contributed to the promotion and advancement of human rights, democracy and peace in their work.

Candidates eligible for the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights are nominated by other individuals or organizations. An individual cannot nominate himself or herself.

Core criteria:
1) A person or group who is actively involved in the promotion of Peace and Human Rights and the development of Democracy.
OR
2) A person or group working for the reunification of Korea.

Nominations will be taken from November to the first week of May. Preliminary and final reviews of nominees take place from May to April, and the winner of the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award will be announced in the last week of April.

The Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award will be presented to the laureate at a ceremony in Gwangju, Republic of Korea on May 18, which is the 30th Anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising. The Award consists of a gold medal, a certificate and a 50 Million Korean Won (KRW 50,000,000.00) grant to support the ongoing work of the laureate.

The annual Gwangju Prize for Human Rights has the following aims:1) To enhance the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising by recognizing individuals, groups and institutions who have contributed to protecting the human rights of the excluded, impoverished and disempowered at the grassroots level.2) To reward individuals, groups and institutions for promoting the goals of the May 18 Democratic Uprising as a movement toward peace, unification and cooperation.

The University of Canterbury (UC) offers a number of scholarships for study towards a PhD degree or for the thesis year of a Masters degree. There is strong competition for these scholarships and applicationmust have gained at least a first class honours degree, or the equivalent, for it to be worth applying.

To be considered for a University of Canterbury Master or Doctoral scholarship, in addition to submitting a scholarship application form, a complete application for admission shouldbe made before or at the same time as the scholarship application is made. If admission has not been approved by prescribed dates, the scholarship application will not be considered.

University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarships
University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarships are tenable for full-time study or part-time study towards the PhD degree at the University of Canterbury. Both domestic and international students are eligible.

The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the sixth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum.

The Forum seeks to empower young leaders by involving them in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems, and nurturing individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights. To this end, the Forum will:

Introduce participants to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Build a network of solidarity among human rights leaders

Expand the knowledge relevant to human rights practice

Provide tools and a platform for open debates

Provide programmes, activities and processes necessary for human rights leadership

Promote the sharing of experiences and understanding

Showcase speakers on such topics as: health and human rights, education, the environment, the plight of child soldiers, the use of media, fundraising, conflict resolution and transformation; litigation and advocacy

The UNESCO Chair will provide all conference participants with dormitory housing, meals, ground transportation in Connecticut, resource materials and a certificate of participation.

Young people between the ages of 18-30, with community service experience, and with demonstrated ability to work on solutions to human rights problems, should apply. Relevant issues include, but are not limited to, human trafficking, the plight of children, refugees, hunger, HIV/AIDs, gender discrimination, racism, classism, the environment and peace education.

Conference will be held in English only. Fluency in English is required. Applicants will be selected based on the strength of their application essay, demonstrated commitment to human rights (practical/hands-on experience), potential impact on the individual and their potential contribution to the Forum, regional and gender representation.

Current world population includes an estimated 1.2 billion young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years, which is about 24.7% of the world’s working age population. Worldwide youth unemployment is high, almost three times higher than the adult unemployment rate. With the economic downturn, the worldwide youth unemployment is expected to reach 15% in 2009 (International Labor Organization, 2008). In certain parts of the world, i.e., Sub-Saharan Africa, youth unemployment rates can be as high as 60%. More than one third of the young people in the world are unemployed, have completely given up looking for a job or are working but still living below the $2 a day poverty line (ILO), or have migrated. Young job seekers face increasing difficulties finding work in the current economic scenario.

How can youths be part of the solution?

The Essay Competition invites youths to share ideas on:

How can you tackle youth unemployment through youth-led solutions?
Please answer both questions:

How does youth unemployment affect you, your country, town or local community?

What can you do, working together with your peers, to find a sustainable solution for job seekers through youth entrepreneurship? Think specifically about the barriers youths face in the labor market and how to tackle difficulties in accessing capital for business startups.

We encourage you to give concrete examples if you have personal experience as a young entrepreneur and if not share your ideas about how you would go about creating a business/ work opportunities in your local community/ town/ country.

Length and format

General: All work must be submitted by individuals, group work is not allowed.
One participant may only submit one work per category. However, one participant may (but doesn’t have to, of course) submit work in both categories, that is: one essay and one video.
All submissions must be made online via the Essay Competition website. Videos are submitted via YouTube.

Submissions can be made in English, French or Spanish.

Essay: Your essay may not be longer than 4000 words (about 10 pages of standard text). Essays are accepted in the following formats: .doc or .pdf.

What is the purpose of the e8 scholarship?

The purpose of the e8 scholarship is to support outstanding students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject.

PhD Research Scholarship at SEARCA

PhD Research Scholarship
Launched in November 2005, the SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship provides financial support to a limited number of qualified PhD students whose researches are relevant to the priority thrusts of SEARCA.

This scholarship program aims to:

Provide PhD students the opportunity to use the resources and facilities available at SEARCA and its network of universities for their research;

Produce quality research papers for publication; and

Enable them to work with SEARCA's R&D personnel on mutually identified areas of concerns/interests in agriculture and rural development.

Eligibility for the Grant
Any graduate student who is a citizen of any SEAMEO member country and pursuing a PhD in agriculture or related sciences from any university in the world is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The applicant must have already completed his/her course work with an approved dissertation proposal and is ready to conduct the dissertation research.The applicant’s research must focus on any of SEARCA’s priority thrusts under the broad themes of natural resource management and promotion of agricultural competitiveness.

MS/PhD Scholarships

Its people are Southeast Asia’s most potent force for progress. Hence, agricultural human resource development has been SEARCA’s primary goal since its establishment. SEARCA is one of the "centers of excellence" established by SEAMEO. As such, SEARCA assists SEAMEO member countries in producing highly trained human resources in agriculture and related sciences to accelerate agricultural and rural development in Southeast Asia.

Two of SEARCA's activities that carry out this mandate are the Graduate Study Program and the University Consortium. Both activities are handled by the Graduate Scholarship Department (GSD).

This degree scholarship was initiated in academic year 1968-69 and aims to ensure the relevance and responsiveness of Southeast Asia's agricultural scientists and professionals to global sustainable development issues.

The program provides support for advanced studies leading to the MS and PhD degrees in agriculture, forestry, and related fields. Thus, SEARCA aims to prepare grantees for positions of leadership in developing economies of SEAMEO member countries.

Applicants may also view information on benefits and privileges of scholars, places of study, application procedures, where to apply, recruitment procedures, and conditions of the grant.

Benefits and Privileges
The SEARCA scholarship offers the following benefits and privileges:
Financial Support covers stipend, tuition, international and domestic travel allowances, thesis/dissertation support, book allowance, and health insurance. The domestic travel allowance is sometimes allowed to support registration fees in training courses/seminars/workshops.

Discounted Accommodation. Scholars are encouraged to stay at the SEARCA Residence Hotel (SRH) to meet other graduate students of different nationalities. Scholars who bring their families with them can stay in SEARCA apartments, also at subsidized rental fee.

Assistance with Student Visa Processing. The Center takes care of processing the extension of its scholars' student visas for the duration of their scholarship.

Computer Purchase Loan. This is given to scholars without interest and payable to the Center in a specified number of months through automatic stipend deduction.

In-house and Other Training Courses or Seminars. Scholars may avail of these training courses upon request, especially in fields related to their studies. Official functions like the weekly SEARCA Agriculture and Development Seminar Series are also open to them. They are, therefore, exposed to exchange of ideas outside their classrooms.

Use of SEARCA Facilities. Facilities open to SEARCA scholars are the Center’s Library and Email Room. Scholars studying at UPLB are given free SEARCA e-mail accounts and e-mail access.

Participation in Sociocultural Activities. SEARCA scholars are introduced to the SEARCA family through orientation/welcome party. Being part of the SEARCA family, they are invited to the Center's summer outing, sportsfest, anniversary celebration, and Christmas parties.

Counseling. Scholars who are experiencing academic difficulties and those with personal problems may seek guidance from the Graduate Scholarship Department.

SEARCA Scholarship Application Form (2 copies);

Application forms for admission to the Graduate School of the universities where the applicant may pursue graduate studies under SEARCA scholarship;

Official transcript of academic records of each degree completed (BS transcript for MS applicants and BS and MS transcripts for PhD applicants);

Certification of employment;

A two-page write-up on agricultural competitiveness or natural resource management;

A brief description of the research that the applicant plans to conduct for thesis/dissertation. The research topic must be in line with the priority thrusts of SEARCA. (SEARCA Five-Year Plan may be viewed at http://www.searca.org/web/e_library/reports/SEARCA%208th%20Five-Year%20Plan.pdf);

Two copies of passport-size pictures of the applicant;

Certification from a medical doctor that the applicant is in good physical and mental health condition and is fit to undertake graduate studies;

Results of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): score of 550 for paper-based and 213 for computer-based) or IELTS results (6.0). With His Majesty's consent, the Government of Brunei Darussalam is offering annual scholarships under a special scholarship award scheme, commencing in academic session.

Tenable in Brunei Darussalam, the aim of the Scholarship awards is to provide students, with the opportunity to study at Universiti Brunei Darussalam [UBD], Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali [UNISSA] and Institut Teknologi Brunei [ITB].

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be citizens of ASEAN, OIC, Commonwealth Member Countries and others and must be between the ages of 18 - 25 at the commencement of the academic session for which they are applying for admission. However, under exceptional case, the age limit requirement may be waived for candidates who are applying for Masters and PhD Programmes.

The awards are NOT eligible to Brunei Permanent Residents and foreigners residing in Brunei Darussalam for more than three months.

TENURE OF SCHOLARSHIP

The Scholarship award is normally tenable according to the duration of the specific programme which is four years for an Honours First Degree or one to two years for a Master's Degree or three years for a Doctoral programme at UBD, UNISSA and ITB, two and a half years for HND at ITB on full-time basis.

The Scholarship award is subject to the scholar maintaining satisfactory conduct and satisfactory progress in the scholar`s studies (this requires the scholar to maintain an active registration status by passing the prescribed semester examinations and obtaining the minimum course credit units).

ADMISSION TO UNIVERSITI BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Applicants must satisfy the general entry requirements and specific entry requirements as set for each programme.

Applicants must also note that fulfilling the general entry requirements and specific entry requirements does not guarantee entry into UBD's programmes as admission to all programme is competitive and limited subject to availability of space.

Entry Requirements for Ph. D. Programmes.

General Entry Requirements.

The minimum requirement for Ph.D Programmes is normally a relevant Master's Degree or an Upper Second Class Bachelor's Degree with Honours or its equivalent from institutions recognized by the University Senate. Applicants are also required to submit a detailed research
proposal which is normally expected to include the following topics: proposed title; rationale; aims and methodology; literature review; preliminary bibliography; provisional timetable; provisional table of contents; and an indication of any special requirements for the study. The duration of a Ph. D. programme is normally 3 to 5 years full-time.

Entry Requirements for Master Degree Programmes

General Entry Requirements.

The minimum requirement for Master Degree Programmes is normally a relevant Bachelor's Degree with Honours (Second Class and above) or its equivalent from institutions recognised by the University Senate unless otherwise stated.

Applicants who do not posses a Second Class Honours Degree may be considered, provided they have relevant working experience and passes other academic or professional qualifications deemed suitable and equivalent for the purpose of admission to the programme.

For entry to English medium masters degree programme, applicants must be able to show English Language Proficiency and those who do not have an English medium undergraduate degree qualification must have at least a credit 6 in English Language at GCE 'O' Level Examination or a grade 'C' in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score of at least 550. Please take note that
other specific entry requirements will be provided under the separate programmes.

Specific Entry Requirements :

To enroll in a Master of Business Administration (MBA) by Coursework, applicants must also have minimum 3 years relevant managerial working experience.

To enroll in a Master of Public Health, First degree in medicine (MBBS or MD) or other healthcare-related fields such as first degree in Nursing, Nutrition and other Allied Health Sciences (consideration may also be given to cadidates with public health field experience and relevant professional qualifications on a case to case basis).

Master of Teaching programme requires an IELTS score of 6.5 OR TOEFL minimum overall score of at least 600 OR completion of an English medium undergraduate degree.

For Secondary and Vocational and Technical Education streams, the applicant's undergraduate studies must be relevant to the choice of subject specialisation(s).

For the Primary and Early Childhood Education streams, the applicant's undergratuate studies must be relevant to the Primary Education curriculum.

Applicants must have obtained a First Degree with at least a Second Class Honour or 'Jayyid' in the relevant discipline; or have a First Degree in the relevant discipline and had not less than three (3) years working experience in related fields.

Applicant applying for admission to Arabic-medium degree programmes may be required to sit and pass an Arabic Language Test.

Applicant applying for admission to English-medium degree programmes should also obtained at least a credit 6 in English Language at IGCSE or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score of 550.

The Masters programmes by Coursework and Coursework and Dissertation will only be offered if there are at least five (5) candidates registered for each of the programmes.

Interest applicants for Master programmes by Research only are abvised to consult the Admission Office of UNISSA before making formal application.

Entry Requirements for First Degree programmes.

At least Credit Passes in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects which must include Mathematics, and at least three GCE Advanced Level passes all at grade C or better or equivalent qualifications relevant to degree programme applied (obtained within the last two years),

At least a Credit in English Language at GCE Ordinary Level examination or an average score of 6.5 and above in the British Council IELTS obtained within the last two years or TEOFL minimum overall score 550 or its equivalent.

The two-year Master in Public Policy (MPP) programme provides a strong foundation in conceptual and analytical skills for future public service leaders and individuals with an interest in understanding and influencing how public policy choices are made.

Areas of Concentration
In particular, MPP students deepen their understanding of a specific field by focusing on one of five areas of concentration:

Master in Public Administration Scholarship the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The 1-year Master in Public Administration (MPA) programme provides an intensive, interdisciplinary course of study for experienced professionals who wish to acquire new knowledge and skills to enhance their leadership and managerial capabilities. This innovative programme can be taken full-time or part-time.

Taught by expert faculty using a problem-based learning approach and real-world case studies, MPA students learn to apply the techniques of policy analysis and programme evaluation to resolve complex multi-dimensional policy challenges, as well as sharpen their leadership and communication skills. The School also conducts an active programme of seminars and public lectures by political, not-for-profit and business leaders to enable all students to complement their formal learning with the opportunity to interact with distinguished individuals who are shaping the future.

The MPA class comprises approximately 60 accomplished and motivated individuals who bring with them a wealth of diverse experiences to enhance the classroom learning experience. European Union scholarship

IDS-FunMat is an International Doctoral Programme in Functional Materials funded by the ERASMUS MUNDUS Programme of the European Union.

Our school offers scholarships for PhD projects in Functional Materials Science, carried out in co-supervision between universities from two different countries (see list of partners). In most projects an industry partner is also involved. The PhD candidates must spend at least 6 months in each university. The projects start around October and take 3-4 years.

The European Union finances each year a number of ERASMUS MUNDUS PhD scholarships in our school, and in addition we have PhD projects funded by other sources.

Scholarships for PhD projects in Functional Materials Science which are carried out in co-supervision between universities from two different countries (see list of partners). Category A: (6 scholarships in 2010) Candidates from countries outside of the "EU+", who have, for the last 12 months, not carried out their main activity (studies, work etc) inside the "EU+". EXCEPTION: Third country candidates who have received an ERASMSUS MUNDUS masters scholarship.

Category B: (4 scholarships in 2010) Everybody else (most "EU+" based students)
("EU+" means EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Turkey, Western Balkan Countries)

In addition our school offers PhD scholarships funded by other sources (industry, universities, governments, etc). For these scholarships there are no general limitations on nationality or residence. These projects also have individual deadlines.

The general condition for all categories is that the applicant has, or will have at the start of his/her PhD, a Master or equivalent university degree in Materials Science or a related field. You will also need sufficient knowledge of English language.

The application and selection procedure is handled online via this website. In order to apply, you must first of all register, using the 'Register' option under the LOGIN menu (bottom left). If there is no Register link, the registration is closed.

Once registered, you will receive an email with a confirmation link which you must open to activate your login. You will then be able to login and file your application. Note that you can login several times to complete your application, as long as you respect the deadline.

Society for Philosophy and Literary Studies, Kathmandu, Nepal, and its reviewed "Journal of Philosophy: A Cross-Disciplinary Inquiry," looks for articles for its Fall 2010 Special Issue on MODERNISMS. We are looking for articles, which examine the historical and material conditions and philosophical or theoretical/experimental perspectives that influenced the form and content of the modernist (contemporary and past) arts and literature.

Ph.D Scholarships at Aarhus University

The Department of Management at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, has an opening for a PhD scholarship as of 1 March or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over the past few years, entrepreneurship has become an area of increased strategic interest and the entrepreneurship research group at The Department of Management therefore invites applicants for a position as PhD student. This particular position is within the area of entrepreneurship and regional development and is funded by the Regional Development Council.

The PhD student will be joining a dedicated and vibrant group of senior and junior researchers in entrepreneurship from both the business school and the university. S/he will be expected to partake in events arranged by the group and in writing of academic articles alone and with members of the group, and to communicate research results to the public. A successful international applicant is expected to acquire a basic working knowledge of Danish during the early period of the PhD position.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong interest and some prior knowledge in entrepreneurship theory. We value methodological plurality. Earlier experience with working in an academic environment from a position as research assistant will be preferable.

PhD students in Denmark work under very favourable terms: They are employed on a full-time basis for three years, and the salary is sufficient to cover all necessary accommodation and living costs and to lead an active life. A PhD student does not pay university fees.

PhD students at Aarhus School of Business (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.

There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employmentThe PhD fellowship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the fellowship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

The assessment of the application comprises an overall assessment of the applicant and his or her qualifications. Particular weight is attached to the project proposal, the grades obtained by the applicant in the study programme, and to whether the applicant, during the study programme or in another manner, has displayed special skills in writing major papers, e.g. a thesis.

Aarhus School of Business is part of Aarhus University. It currently has 480 permanent employees, including 240 researchers. ASB holds the international EQUIS accreditation awarded by the EFMD (European Foundation of Management Development).

DUO-Singapore Exchange Fellowship

The Asia-Europe Meeting's (ASEM) DUO Fellowship Fund aims to promote student exchanges between European and Asian ASEM member countries. Under this fund, the DUO-Singapore Exchange Fellowship is awarded by the Singapore Government to Singapore and ASEAN students studying in the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Management University (SMU). The Award is also open to students from European ASEM countries (who come from universities with fee waiver arrangements with NTU, NUS and SMU)

The Award, based on merit, is for a pair of exchanges between a university in Singapore and its respective partner university in Europe in any academic field. Each student will be awarded a maximum of 4,000 Euros for one semester of up to four months, which covers airfare, accommodation and living expenses.

There is no bond imposed by the Singapore Government for the Award, which is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Participating in any Exchange Programme offers an excellent opportunity for the student to make friends, to build networks and learn about other cultures. It also gives the student a chance to experience the host country's cultural diversity, its stimulating cosmopolitan environment and explore the countries around it while still pursuing the undergraduate or postgraduate studies. The following students can attest to this:

"Participation in the student exchange programme was extremely beneficial, because on top of the subsistence (finance etc.), I learnt a lot about Asia, and particularly Singaporean culture, people, society and studying / business environment. I naturally also learnt a lot about myself during my five months stay abroad, and created many new contacts with both Asian and European people. Terms of Award

The ASEM DUO Exchange Fellowship Award is tenable for one semester of up to four months.

Each recipient will be awarded a maximum of 4,000 Euros that covers airfare, accommodation and living expenses. No additional assistance will be provided for other expenses.

Recipients need not pay any tuition fees to the foreign university but continue to pay the normal fees to the university they are from.

There is no bond imposed on the recipient by the Singapore Government.

The Singapore Government may, at its discretion, waive any of the conditions of the Award

Applicants should satisfy the following criteria:

Singaporean students in NTU, NUS and SMU.

Students from other ASEAN countries that are members of ASEM (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) studying in NTU, NUS and SMU and who are not prevented by terms of their scholarship from going on exchange programmes.

Fellowship at UNFPA Special Youth Programme

The Special Youth Programme fellowship consists of an initial 4.5 months fellowship at UNFPA Headquarters, New York, followed by a continued fellowship of another 4.5 months in the UNFPA Office in the country of the fellow.

UNFPA will recruit six young people to be Special Youth Fellows from 1 April – 31 December.

Objective

This programme is designed to give young people from developing countries opportunities to engage in policy development and programming; to help build the capacity of young people; and to sensitize both young people and UNFPA staff on partnering to address adolescent and youth issues.

During the course of the programme, fellows will:

# Attend and participate in UNFPA and UN events and meetings as appropriate

# Undertake research and writing assignments

# Contribute to ongoing projects and programmes

# Organize a final presentation to UNFPA HQ staff on their projects and fellowships in Headquarters

# Interact with the New York local youth community on at least one occasion

# Develop a relationship with the Regional and Country Office and provide updates on their activities during the HQ fellowship and provide updates to HQ during fellowship at Regional or Country Office

All selected candidates will be provided:

Scholarship for PhD and post-doctoral studies in Sweden

Countries
The program is open to candidates from three different categories of countries that determine certain aspects of the program.

1. Category one

Candidates coming from all countries on the Development Assistance Committee list of recipients of Official Development Assistance, the so-called ODA recipients.

From the above DAC list some priority will be given to candidates coming from countries that Sweden have long-term development cooperation with. This means that a minimum of 50 % of the candidates will be chosen from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

The program is not open to candidates from Ukraine, Belarus and Turkey, in spite of them being on the DAC list of ODA recipients. These citizens should instead apply for scholarship through the Visby Program, or in the case of Turkey, the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Program.

In category one we have the opportunity to offer approximately 50 scholarships. The final number of scholarships depend on how many candidates in the final selection that have applied for PhD studies or Postdoctoral research, and on how long these candidates plan to stay in Sweden — 6 or 12 months, or sandwich (several shorter research visits).

2. Category two

Candidates coming from the following countries: France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and the United States.

In category two we have the opportunity to offer approximately 5-10 scholarships. The final number of scholarships depend on how many candidates in the final selection that have applied for PhD studies or Postdoctoral research, and on how long these candidates plan to stay in Sweden — 6 or 12 months, or sandwich (several shorter research visits).

3. Category three

Candidates coming from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Serbia.

In category three we have the opportunity to offer approximately 5-10 scholarships. The final number of scholarships depend on how many candidates in the final selection that have applied for PhD studies or Postdoctoral research, and on how long these candidates plan to stay in Sweden — 6 or 12 months, or sandwich (several shorter research visits).

Target groups
The program provides PhD students and researchers with an excellent opportunity to conduct a study or research visit to a Swedish university within all fields of study. As a Guest Scholarship Program candidate you can choose to apply for a study/research visit to Sweden according to the following models:

Post-doctoral research: a long-term postdoctoral research visit of 6 or 12 months.

PhD studies: a long-term PhD research visit of 6 or 12 months.

PhD-studies: PhD research visit according to a sandwich setup, i.e. several shorter research visits.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship amounts to SEK 12,000 per month for PhD students andSEK 15,000

for postdoctoral researchers.

Who is eligible?

The scholarships are intended for guest students or researchers belonging to any of the above mentioned countries and target groups, applying for full-time temporary studies/research in Sweden. There is no age limit for the scholarship holders.

However, you are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:

You have already lived in Sweden for two years of more when the scholarship period is due to begin.

You have a Swedish permanent residence permit.

You have a Swedish work permit and you are not an EU citizen.

You are applying for a scholarship at PhD level but you are not enrolled in ongoing PhD studies at your home university.

You are applying for a scholarship at Postdoctoral level, but you do not hold any PhD degree.

New applicants will be given priority over applicants that have previously been awarded a scholarship from the SI for study or research at a Swedish university.

Travel grants

Scholarship holders from ODA countries will receive travel support in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum given only once. However, PhD students on a sandwich setup from ODA recipient countries will be given a travel grant in connection to every research visit to Sweden (maximum four visits divided over two years).

Candidates from the following countries receive SEK 5 000: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia.

Candidates from remaining ODA recipient countries receive SEK 10 000.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period. For citizens of EU member states and other Convention countries the insurance applies with certain limitations.

Scholarship limitations

Scholarship periods are fixed to 6 or 12 months, except for the PhD sandwich setup that entails a maximum of 12 months to be used between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2011, i.e. over a period of two years with maximum 2 research visits per year. The scholarship periods cannot be altered or prolonged.

The scholarship is designed to cover the cost of living for the scholarship holder only. There are no grants available for family members. No bench fee is provided.

The objective of the scholarship program is to promote democratic, economic and social development through supporting know-how and transfer of knowledge to advanced students within areas in which Sweden is at the forefront of academic research.

Countries
The program is only available to citizens of the following countries: Albania, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kenya, Kosovo, Mali, Moçambique, Moldova, Rwanda, Serbia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. About 40 scholarships will be offered for the academic year.

Prior to applying for a scholarship, application to the master’s degree program must be made via the online application service for master’s programs in Sweden at www.studera.nu.

Scholarship benefits and period
The scholarship amount is SEK 8,000 per month and the scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in fall semester. The scholarships are usually granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time, but will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that study results are satisfactory.

How to apply
Prior to applying for a scholarship, application to the master’s degree program must be made via the online application service for master’s programs in Sweden at www.studera.nu.

After you have applied to a master’s degree program, the application procedure for scholarships will then open in February.

Only a limited number of Swedish master programs will be eligible for scholarships next year. The selection of master programs will take place in January and the list will be published together with the call for applications in February.

The eligible master programs will be within the following study areas: agriculture and forestry, environmental studies, natural sciences (biotechnology, energy), democracy/human rights/gender issues, peace and development studies, economics and entrepreneurship, education, engineering, health science/medicine, information and communication technology, international relations, media and journalism, law/ international law, social issues, spatial/urban planning and real estate management.

Who is eligible?

You are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:

You have already lived in Sweden for two years or more when the scholarship period is due to begin.

You have a Swedish permanent residence permit or a work permit.

You have a previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at the master’s level or research at a Swedish university.

However, students who have attended a Swedish Institute summer course in Swedish language or the Swedish Institute Summer University may apply.

Travel grants
Scholarship holders from ODA countries will receive travel support in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum, given only once. Citizens from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia (FYROM), Kosovo, Moldova and Serbia, will receive SEK 5,000. Citizens from the remaining countries receive SEK 10,000.

Insurance
Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship limitations
The scholarship is designed to cover living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members.
